DESCRIPTION

Goodwin Industrial Electric was contracted to complete the electrical installation and commissioning of a new 4,500kW district energy heating plant in North Vancouver, BC.

The project formed part of a major district energy infrastructure development and required the installation of electrical systems supporting boilers, pumps, instrumentation, controls, and power distribution equipment. The facility serves as a critical component of the district energy network and required close coordination between multiple trades throughout construction and commissioning.

Electrical Scope of Work

The project required the installation and integration of electrical infrastructure supporting heating plant operations and district energy distribution systems.

The scope of work included:

  • Installation and commissioning of three gas boilers

  • Installation of three boiler loop pumps

  • Installation of three district energy system (DES) loop pumps

  • Integration of field instrumentation including temperature sensors, pressure transmitters, flow meters, and energy calculators

  • Supply and installation of main power feeders, cable tray systems, and support structures

  • Installation of 600V and 120/208V electrical panels, transformers, and UPS systems

  • Installation of VFDs, magnetic starters, and PLC control cabinets

  • Instrumentation and control wiring to field devices

  • QA/QC verification, motor testing, and commissioning support

The completed installation provided the electrical infrastructure required to support reliable operation of the district energy system.

Instrumentation and Control System Integration

A significant portion of the project involved integrating instrumentation and control systems required to monitor and manage heating plant operations.

The project required extensive instrumentation and control system integration, including temperature monitoring, pressure monitoring, flow measurement, energy metering, and PLC-based control systems. These systems provide operators with the information required to monitor plant performance, maintain efficiency, and support reliable operation of the district energy network.

Goodwin coordinated the installation of field devices, control wiring, PLC systems, and power distribution equipment while working closely with mechanical contractors and project stakeholders to support successful system integration.

District Energy Infrastructure and System Integration

District energy systems provide centralized heating infrastructure that serves residential, commercial, and mixed-use developments through a shared energy network. These facilities rely on the coordinated operation of boilers, pumps, instrumentation, controls, and electrical infrastructure to maintain reliable service.

Goodwin worked closely with project stakeholders and other contractors to align installation activities, commissioning schedules, and project milestones. Detailed planning and coordination supported the successful delivery of the facility while maintaining construction schedules and quality requirements.

Commissioning and Operational Readiness

Following installation, Goodwin supported testing, verification, QA/QC procedures, motor testing, and commissioning activities to help prepare the facility for operation.

Electrical systems, instrumentation, control components, and field devices were tested and verified to support startup requirements and long-term system performance. The commissioning process helped ensure all systems operated as intended and were ready to support the facility's operational requirements.

Safety and Quality

Safety remained a priority throughout all phases of construction and commissioning. Goodwin crews followed established procedures and coordinated closely with project stakeholders to maintain a safe and productive work environment.

From instrumentation installation through final commissioning, all work was completed in accordance with Goodwin's commitment to quality workmanship and safe work practices..
